Kapitel Dreizehn (13) – Die Fabelwesen (The Monster)

The young Äs Nödt lay on the cold ground of an unknown place as he slowly opened his colored eyes. He took his time as he got up to a sitting position and rubbed his eyes. When his vision was clearer, all he saw ahead of him was darkness. He winced a bit as he crawled himself backwards until he hit a wall, his face contorted in utter fear. One thing he could not stomach was the darkness. He reached to his side, hoping to find his mother there but felt nothing. He widened his eyes more than they have been and stood up to get a better view of his surroundings He saw no one. He meekly glanced in front of him and saw that he was in a jail cell of sorts. Beads of sweat started to make their way down his face as he panted and ran over to the cell bars, grasping them tightly.

“Mother…where are you…Where are you, mother?! Mother!”

“Shut up, you simpering little brat!” He looked towards the sound as a tall man in what seemed to be lab’s clothing stood in his midst. Nödt slowly backed away from the figure, wondering how and when he had gotten there in front of him on the other side of the bars.

“What’s your name?”

Nödt was too horrified to speak, as nothing came out of his mouth; his throat felt as dry as sandpaper. He made a pained expression as even swallowing his own saliva was agonizing enough.

“I asked you a question, you stupid brat!”

Nödt recoiled at the man’s loud and ferocious sounding voice, his eyes shaking.

“I-It’s Äs Sch-Schäfer…” he mumbled in uneasiness, his voice breaking.

“Schäfer…? Interesting…the same surname as the woman we just took in…”

“W-Woman…?” Nödt’s voice quavered. Before he could ask which woman the mysterious man talked about, the young boy heard an ear-splitting scream that immediately made his stomach turn violently. He saw that the man in front of him simply rolled his eyes at the sound, not perturbing him a bit. The scream was heard again, this time louder that the boy had to cover his ears. He felt like the scream was going to split his head in half and it gave him the sickest feeling he had ever felt in his life. Before he knew it, the screams were too much for him to handle, and threw up on the ground near the man’s feet.

“You dumb little pest, look at what you did to my robes! You’re such a damn little weakling!”

Nödt suddenly started sobbing, though he didn’t feel tears coming out of his eyes. As the man dusted himself, another came from behind him and pat him on the shoulder.

“We’re ready for the kid…the woman was a failure…”

“Really…?”

Nödt was too frightened that he wasn’t paying attention to what the two men were saying as he knelt on the ground with his hands over his head.

“Alright, you little pest…We’re ready for you…”

Nödt had lost all feeling in his body as the cell was opened and the two men brought him up to his feet. He didn’t care where he was going; all he wanted to see was his mother. As he hung his face down again, from the corner of his eyes he was a gurney of sorts with a hand hanging from the side. The body was covered, but it didn’t take long for the young boy to realize that the one in the stretcher was his mother by the ring she wore on her finger. His eyes widened tremendously at the sight; the one whom he had heard screaming had been his own mother.

“M-Mother…?”

He continued staring with eyes wide in anxiety. He felt like he wanted to writhe away from the two men’s holds and race to his now deceased mother’s side, but for some reason he didn’t find the strength to. Also, no tears were coming out again despite feeling like he wanted to cry out in grief. His body simply slumped down in the men’s grips; he didn’t know why the tears weren’t coming out.

‘…I loved my mother…she was the center of my world…so…why am I not crying…? Why am I not feeling…sad…?’

This feeling terrified him. He didn’t notice when they arrived in what appeared to be a surgical room of sorts with a bed in the center of the room and a huge light above it. Many cutting utensils sat in a metal table next to the bed, which also had belts where the wrists and ankles would go. The bright light was what distracted him as he shielded his eyes from the intense rays. He was too blinded to see where he was; instead all he felt was arms wrapped around his body that lay him in the bed. The light was removed from his way as he was being fastened onto the bed with the belts. He tried moving, but realized that his ankles and wrists were constricted tightly.

“Wh-What…?”

He wore a confused expression as he saw another figure approach him leisurely. Unlike the other men that he had seen so far, Nödt saw that the one approaching had a peculiar and quite creepy-looking mask with a headgear of sorts protruding from the mask that he wore. Nödt cowered a bit away from the odd-looking man.

“Oh, very interesting…a young little boy…Hopefully this one is not as loud of a screamer as the lady before him…”

Nödt knew that the one the odd man was talking about was his own mother. But even now, no tears were being shed from his eyes; he just looked on in fretfulness at the man.

“So, lad…what is your name?”

Nödt gulped slowly and shut his eyes.

“Äs… Schäfer…” Suddenly, the boy opened his eyes, and looked towards his side. “No…not Schäfer…It’s Nödt… Äs Nödt…”

Schäfer was his surname given to him by his father, but his father had shown little to no fatherly affection towards him; it was as if he never had a father. Since, for some reason, tears weren’t coming out to mourn the death of his beloved mother, the least he could do was use her maiden surname as homage.

“Very well, Mister Nödt…My name is…Mayuri Kurotsuchi…and I will be giving you a few little pokes…”

Nödt didn’t care anymore; his life was meaningless. He simply closed his eyes, ready to greet Death in the face. The following injections of who knows what didn’t hurt as much; as a matter of fact, the effects were quite positive. He didn’t feel as weak as he had a few minutes ago; Nödt didn’t know what exactly these people wanted to do to him.

“W-Was that it…?” he asked timidly. He didn’t gain a response, but by the look on Mayuri’s face, he knew that the injections weren’t the only thing they were going to do to him.

“My dear boy…those injections were given to you for a reason…it’s to enhance your durability…for the proceeding procedure…”

Mayuri held a scalpel near the boy’s face.

“You see, it is my duty to experiment on your kind to see what interesting things I can find…since you are a Quincy, I must experiment on you…there’s much to learn from you…”

Nödt gritted his teeth in fear at the sight of the knife, and turned his face to the side

“You’re sedating me, right…?”

Mayuri simply let out a sinister chuckle.

“You really are a silly boy…”

Before Nödt could prepare for it, the mad scientist Soul Reaper unmercifully dug the scalpel into Nödt’s body, slashing and cutting away easily as peeling an orange. The pain was unlike any other that Nödt has ever felt; so excruciating that he clenched his fists too tight that they bled. He tried hard not to scream, but it was inevitable. Kurotsuchi was literally performing a surgery of sorts with his young patient conscious. This torturous incident continued for what seemed like eternities. Mayuri found it astounding that after almost an hour of experimenting on the young boy, the latter was very well still conscious and alive, though he had inanimate eyes and was unaware of his surroundings.

“Very interesting…the young boy withstood my experiment!” He glanced over at his subordinates with a gleeful expression. “…I was able to extract some information about him that could be useful…And since he was able to make it out alive, I’ll see to more experimenting tomorrow…Stitch him up and have him ready for me first thing tomorrow…”

Kurotsuchi’s subordinates nodded and did what they were told. For several weeks, Nödt was submitted through hellacious and painful experiments all while being conscious. Mayuri really liked the information that he extracted from Nödt’s body, and the fact that the young boy had lost all rational thought due to the torture intrigued him even more.

“This boy is a walking treasure box…!” he would exclaim in utter sick joy.

Several weeks later, once again Nödt was placed on the same bed in the same room. But now, he was virtually unrecognizable; he was covered in visible dark stitches except for his face, and his skin now looked pallid and white. His inanimate eyes no longer had that aquamarine glow; they looked black, dilated and almost lifeless, almost as if he was now void from all emotions.

“Amazing…it seems that from all the experiments he’s gone through, his eyes have darkened and widened, and his skin has become pale…It must be the trauma from the pain…”

“Is that good or bad…?” one of Mayuri’s subordinates inquired.

“It doesn’t matter…all I care about is the information I’m getting out of him…I’ve removed information from every part of his body…except from his face…Today will be his face…”

“Yes sir…” the subordinates said in unison as they began yet another unbearable procedure.

During it, as Kurotsuchi sliced away on the young boy’s face, he noticed the boy’s eyes. The mad scientist could see that Nödt’s eyes were glistening and getting watery, and muttered in derision; this was distracting him. A single tear managed to slide down his cut face that sidetracked Mayuri completely, cursing as he took a step back.

“Futile, absolutely futile…” He threw the scalpel to the ground in anger as he stormed towards the exit.

“Wait, sir…! What happened…?”

“I was distracted…I went a centimeter too far to the right…that stupid child! Fix his face!”

“Alright, we’ll stitch it up…”

“No…”

Mayuri’s team glanced up at him in confusion, wondering what he meant.

“Wait…What…?”

“Don’t stitch it this time…obliterate it and reconstruct a new one…After coming so far, it had to be ruined by his stupid crying…He’s a failure…”

“But sir, what do we do with him though? He’s clearly still alive but in a severe state of shock…”

“Send him wherever you please, I don’t give a damn…I’m not interested in him anymore…”

The team obliged, and hovered over Nödt’s inert self, preparing to restructure his entire appearance.

StarCrossed: Getrennt von Schicksal (Separated by Destiny) - Kapitel Dreizehn (Chapter Thirteen)

☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Here is Chapter 13 of my Romance/Tragedy alternate story entitled 'StarCrossed: Getrennt von Schicksal', or for short, 'StarCrossed'. As mentioned before, this is an alternate version of the canon storyline of Bleach after the Vandenreich Invasion. This is the second chapter of Äs Nödt's flashback; I'll admit it can be a bit uncomfortable, but I imagine his past being very tragic and painful which could have led to his very formidable present self. Also, I decided to include the picture I made to promote the short story as the cover page for the chapter; I'll be including it in every chapter. Hope you all don't mind! Thank you and hope you all enjoy!

Summary:

A Soul Reaper named Kasandora Haruna is left traumatized after her encounter with the immoral Stern Ritter Äs Nödt. At first, she feels vulnerable by his mere presence, but later on she understands him when his past is revealed, which leads to her falling for him. But when the second invasion approaches, that's where she must decide whom she will truly side with: Soul Reapers, or remain with her love and side with the Quincies..

I really felt sorry for As Nodt here.  Perhaps it was a good thing you waited because the damage to his body has been revealed in the manga allowing you to write a better story about it.  I can picture what's going on much more clearly.
